Pair Japanese Fare With Specialty Cocktails at Kumiko

The newly opened Kumiko in the West Loop calls itself a cocktail bar, but it’s the menu of thoughtful dishes that will have you coming back again and again. That certainly isn’t to discredit the cocktails, however — regulars say you should definitely start your experience with one of their handcrafted libations.

The cocktail menu is about three times longer than the food offering, and features both fresh and light drinks and warm boozy concoctions with a nod to the Japanese heritage of chef Julia Momose. There are also equally inventive spirit-free drinks with special and distinct ingredients that feel as celebratory as the cocktails. Then, it’s onto the food. Choose to enjoy an omakase service when you sit at the bar (by reservation only), or order from the food menu that features a few starters, entrees, and desserts. Each item, from warm oysters with kombu butter to Berkshire pork belly steam buns, perfectly pairs with an exquisite cocktail offering.

Kumiko is open Wednesday through Sunday.
